Knaresborough Forest v Pannal
9th June 2007

Playing at the beautiful Knaresborough Forest ground, Pannal romped to an exceptionally easy victory over a side that ended up having a bigger bark than they did a bite. Having won the toss, Graham Fish and Pannal decided to take up first effort with the bat and with two of the most in form openers in the league, Andy Ellis (60) and John Strover (43) got off to a solid and swift start. Having set the foundations for a big acceleration from the middle order, John Strover lost his wicket and was quickly followed by Jon Smailes (who got a terrible lbw decision). Once Andy Ellis lost his wicket, Sharkie Patel (52) and Dave Wood (63*) set about the bowling in brutal fashion, demolishing anything coming their way (some of the blows from Dave Wood were immense!). Jimmy Henry contributed a quickfire cameo of 33* which allowed us to total 274 / 4 Having been on the end of some substantial abuse from the Forest boys (and I mean boys), the intensity levels were already set amongst the Pannal men and set about the Forest batsman one at a time. At 6 for 2 and struggling to contend with Jon Smith (10-3-27-2) and Will Liddle (12-5-24-2), Knaresborough set about playing a game of defend defend smash….playing totally by numbers, but what was even more confusing was that they never looked to be going for a point, which is crazy considering them being bottom of the log! Sharkie Patel (12-4-31-4) had Forest playing him as if he were bowling grenades not little red balls…of course Sharkie was helped out by some exceptional catching by Graham Fish and Tom Lilley. Having defended everything in sight, it came down to the last over and the seventh ball of the over to see our unconventional and underused wicket taker Jon Smailes to allow us to take all 6 points and raucous celebrations against a side im not sure anyone is going to like. Good luck in Division 2 Knaresborough Forest!

Pannal 274-4, Knaresborough Forest 135allout

Pannal v Kirkby Malzeard
2nd June 2007

Coming up against a team who were intent on gaining a point from ball one, Pannal were made to remain disciplined in all areas in order to chip away at the stubborn Kirkby side. Having lost the toss and being asked to bowl, Jonathan Smith (12-1-36-2) found that legendary line and length immediately and had their openers in all sorts of trouble, even though both of them appeared more interested in McDonalds than cricket! Having assessed that the sole aim of the side was to come to Pannal and gain a point, skipper Graham Fish realised the need to change the bowling and did so successfully, taking 3-33 himself and introducing the returning Johnny Hooper, 3-26. Unfortunately Kirkby held out for a point with their two stalwarts from St. Hilda’s retirement village flat batting it for 10 overs! Our turn to bat and with Andy Ellis losing his wicket for 10, John Strover and Jonathan Smailes settled into what seemed an easy run chase, putting on an effortless partnership of 58 before John Strover (39) was dismissed. Smailes continued his fluent batting and reached his maiden half century of the season (52*) to guide Pannal home for the loss of 4 wickets.

Kirkby Malzeard 147-9, Pannal 151-4 from 26.1 overs.

Hampsthwaite v Pannal
26th May 2007

Pannal bounced back from last week's disappointment with a 44 run win over Hampsthwaite. The visitors were the first to bat, and headed confidently towards a promising total of 210 runs. The top four batsmen all contributed heavily, with Andy Ellis (58) and Sam Critchley (42) leading the way, while Jon Smailes (36) and John Strover (25) ensured the run total continued to increase. With the batting point guaranteed, the innings closed with the score on 210-9. Hampsthwaite offered little in reply, but for a 47 from Andrew Boyle, as the Pannal bowling attacked proved too much for the home side. The First XI bowlers shared the wickets between Jon Smith (12 1 44 2), Shahen Patel (12 3 31 2) and Tom Lilley (5 1 10 2), whilst Andy Ellis capped his half-century with 3 wickets, finishing with figures of 10 2 42 3. Having lost 9 wickets, the Hampsthwaite innings finished far short of Pannal's total, who returned confidently to winning ways.

Pannal 210-9, Hampsthwaite 166-9 from 45 overs.

19th May 2007

Pannal were dealt an emphatic dose of reality in their first defeat of the season at the hands of Masham, who despite an indifferent start to their batting innings, made their way to a total of 212-5. The most notable and effective of their batting performances saw Dion Wood smash his way to 125*, proving himself to be the back-bone of Masham's attack as very few other batsmen proved their worth. Will Liddle (11 4 31 3) was the pick of the Pannal bowling, whilst Graham Fish (9 2 44 1) and Tom Lilley (8 0 35 0) were also amoungst the wickets. The game appeared to promise a closely-fought affair, but the opening stand of 50 was broken, and the departures of James Henry (20) and John Strover (40) soon followed. The middle order offered little but for Andy Ellis' 22, and with 129 on the scoreboard, Pannal lost the last of their wickets, confining them to their first defeat of the season.

Masham 212-5, Pannal 129allout from 35 overs.

Pannal v Dacre
12th May 2007

A middle order rescue mission and another strong bowling performance handed Pannal their fourth straight league win with a 95 run victory over Dacre. The match began in disasterous fashion, with the 1sts finding themselves at 3-3 in the early stages of the game, but Sam Critchley (16) and Shahen Patel (25) stemmed the flow of wickets, forcing the Pannal batting attack back on track. The total edged higher and higher as the middle order proved to be a vital component of Pannal's weaponary, with Andy Ellis (37), Graham Fish (20) and Tom Lilley (27) all contributing. The pick of the batsmen, however, was Matt Garne, who blasted his way to 86, and the side ended their innings on 221-8. Dacre showed little in the way of a response, except for their opening batsmen who hit the vast majority of their resultant poor reply of 126. The Pannal bowling again came out tops, with Tom Lilley (11.3 2 31 4) and Jon Smith (12 0 46 3) leading the way to another comprehensive six point haul, whilst Ellis (5 0 26 1) and Patel (5 1 22 2) also found themselves amongst the wickets.

Pannal 221-8, Dacre 126allout from 33.3 overs.

Pannal maintained their 100% start to the season with another confident victory, this time confining Bishop Thornton to a 5 wicket defeat. The visitors came close to a six point haul after dismissing 9 of the home side's batsmen, with Shahen Patel (12 7 26 3) the pick of the Pannal bowling attack, whilst contributions from Graham Fish (9 1 41 2) and Andy Ellis (12 0 58 2) also proved valuable. With a total of 180 set before them, the Pannal batsmen got off to an indifferent start finding themselves 40-2 and preparing for a closely-fought match, however John Strover's (69) half century and cameo's from Jon Smailes (27), Patel (35) and Ellis (24) drove the 1sts on to a third consecutive victory, with 12 overs remaining.

Bishop Thornton 179-9, Pannal 182-5 from 33.2 overs.

28st April 2007

Pannal made it two wins out-of two with another comprehensive victory, this time over Killinghall. An early innings collapse from the visitors saw them fall from 29 for no wicket to 60-5, thanks to the bowling of Jon Hooper, who finished with figures of 11 1 47 3, whilst Jon Smith (9 2 22 2) and Will Liddle (12 1 53 2) also contributed to Killinghall's demise. The 8th wicket fell to skipper Graham Fish who ended with figures of 6 0 28 1, with Killinghall ending on 187-8 thanks to a late-innings revival.
