Pannal 3rds v Blubberhouses 2nds28th July 2007
After a highly disrupted, rainy two months of postponed cricket, the 3rds were finally able to get back to action in a dramatic and nervous encounter with Blubberhouses 2nds at Glasshouses. On a rare, sunny day in an increasingly frustrating cricket-less summer, captain Rob Allison elected to bat first, and the Pannal innings was dealt an early blow with the loss of Barry Waddington (8) with the score at 16. Runs proved difficult to come by, and the 3rds suffered another loss as Sam Pocock was caught on 6. Despite the losses of wickets, Pannal began to build a decent total, as contributions from Tom Joel (17) and James Rawlings (9) proved valuable. Allison (81) contributed greatly to the eventual total of 198, whilst Kevin Joel's 38* helped to restore hope of a victory after a slow-scoring start, as he and Ed Sloan (7*) ensured Pannal bagged at least one batting point. The Blubberhouses attack showed the ability to reach high totals quickly, and were cruising at five an over whilst infrequently losing wickets. However, with the score at 144, Rawlings (10 0 45 1) earned a crucial breakthrough, claiming the wicket of one of the visitors' most formidable batsmen. Also amongst the wickets was Will Dodwell (6 0 35 1), who impressed whilst making his 3rds debut, and it was his dismissal that sparked the demise of Blubberhouses' middle order. Pannal were steadily claiming wickets, but a Blubberhouses win still seemed the most likely of outcomes, but the bowling of Ed Sloan (9 3 32 3) and Tom Joel (11.2 0 33 2) meant that a nervy, close finish was likely. With five overs remaining, four wickets in hand and only 7 runs needed, the visitors will have been thinking that only the most disasterous of collapses would have deprived them of a victory. However, as Sloan claimed the second of his wickets, the batsmen were undone by superb displays of fielding ability. Rawlings showed excellent composure under pressure to deliver a perfect run out, whilst catches were held by the likes of Dodwell and Sloan. Matt McWilliams (8 0 42 1) impressed, holding onto one of the more difficult of catching opportunities. The two sides entered the final over, as two Blubberhouses youngsters needed just three more runs, but the game was precariously balanced, as Pannal needed to claim just one further wicket. With only four balls remaining and three runs needed, 3rds claimed an incredible win, as Rawlings claimed the second of his two run outs to hand the home side all six points. Pannal are to be congratulated on their superb fighting spirit and never-say-die attitude as they turned a seemingly unwinnable game into a six point haul over one of Division 6's better sides. Boroughbridge v Pannal 3rds
7th July 2007
The weather played a big part in a lack-lustre Pannal batting performance, either due to the "sticky wicket" we found ourselves batting on, or the "cobwebs" that the strong wind failed to blow away after going precisely a month since our last match (or perhaps a combination of both). It is rare that we lose an early wicket, so to find ourselves at 2-2 in the third over was indeed a shock to the system. Steve Hendry, who top scored with 27, and Rob Allison set about repairing the damage but the tough batting conditions exacerbated the malaise and there was not much that found itself hit off the strip, let alone the square. Runs scored finally overtook the overs tally somewhere in the "twenties". Steve stood head & shoulders above his team-mates in application & effect, though Kevin Joel was the first to hit a boundary & James Rawlings (12) outscored him with two 4's! We were left to thank Jon Hare & Ed Sloan for defending our 10th wicket to earn the batting point as we closed on 74-9 (yes, 74-9 in 45 overs!). The home team started just as badly, thanks to good opening bowling from Chris Hunt (1-6) and Hare (1-15). The thorn in Pannal's side was Steve Parfett who, having recorded bowling figures of 4-22, rode considerable luck early on and combined some questionable defensive shots with some fine strikes against anything not pitched up to him to make 46. Ed Sloan bowled well again, taking 2-18 but it just was one of those days for us as Boroughbridge got home in the 25th over with 5 wickets in hand. As results recorded so far have fallen, we remain 4th in the table. However, a consequence of virtually all the "underdogs" winning yesterday is that the bottom of the table is closer in points terms and there is a bunching of mid-table teams, with only 3 points covering 4th to 7th places. Pannal 3rds v Helperby 2nds
9th June 2007
Pannal once again got off to a confident start, reaching 62 before Sam Pocock (30) gave a catch back to the bowler. After the reliable Barry Waddington departed for 32, the Helperby change bowlers took a vice-like grip on the Pannal middle-innings however, and at 120-5 32 overs had gone down. Enter the Joel twins (well father & son actually) to take the battle to the visitors with a quick-fire stand of 63. Tom left the scene having played some splendid shots in his career-best 3rd XI innings of 40, leaving Jim Walker (16no) to link up with Kevin Joel (35no) in taking Pannal to 226 for 6, thus earning the batting point. General player unavailability throughout the Club this week meant enforced changes of 6 personnel from the team which triumphed over Bolton Abbey the week before. However, good early spells from Tom Joel & James Rawlings saw Helperby at 37 for 2 in the 10th over, Rawlings taking 2-17 in his first 5 overs. He also took an excellent catch on the boundary to dismiss the dangerous looking Sowray off Ed Sloan for 35. in his first competitive match of the season Sloan bowled especially well without luck, taking 1-39. When the two late stand-ins to the Pannal team, Andy Upton & Pete Allison (taking a rest from score-book, match reporting and website to help us out), combined to remove the visiting skipper at 125-4 in the 26th over, little were we to know that a match-winning partnership was to commence. The Helperby pair added 102 in 16 overs and Helperby took the 5 remaining points in the match with two overs to spare. The team couldn't be faulted for effort, though the fact that we were perhaps about 30 runs short of the necessary target and then conceded 38 extras when we bowled was probably the reason that we ran Helperby close but not close enough. Our winning streak has come to an end but thanks should be recorded to all the "new" faces who combined with the old ones to ensure we competed.
Pannal 3rds 226-6, Helperby 2nds 227-4 from 42.3 overs.

Pannal 3rds v Bolton Abbey 2nds
2nd June 2007
Winning the toss and choosing to bat on a fine Glasshouses wicket, Pannal got off to a flyer as Sam Pocock "pinch-hit" his way to 30 out of an opening stand of 42 with Barry Waddington. There followed the partnership upon which the foundations of the home team's innings were built as Rob Allison (41) joined Waddington & the pair added 120, assisted by a high extras tally. After Allison departed, Waddington moved stoically to a fine century (102 no), including a massive one-handed six to take him to his ton which included an array of sparkling boundaries. Fine cameos from Steve Hendry, James Rawlings & Giles Wilkes assisted as the innings closed on 257-5. James Rawlings 1-11 in his opening 5 overs, demonstrated maturity beyond his years as he ably varied his pace & took the first Bolton Abbey wicket. Pannal once again demonstrated that straight bowling brings its rewards, though anything short was quickly seized upon by the visitors' batting mainstay Richard Patchett (97 no). However, Matt McWilliams (3-40) bowled well and was responsible for the demise of the Bolton Abbey middle order. Meanwhile Richard Strover took the bulk of the workload in an unbroken 12 over spell, though his colleagues Dave Bagley (3-28) and Chris Hunt (3-22) deservedly cleaned up the remainder of the wickets to dismiss Pannal's opponents for 169. An 88 run, maximum points win was duly recorded and Bolton Abbey's first defeat of the season had been inflicted. Pannal now move into 2nd place in Division 6, just one point behind leaders Bolton Abbey.
Pannal 3rds 257-5, Bolton Abbey 2nds 169allout from 35.2 overs.

Masham 2nds v Pannal 3rds
26th May 2007
Opting to bat first on what looked to be an excellent wicket, Pannal made a solid if unspectacular start. With the odd ball keeping low, the variable bounce ensured that whilst Masham took few early Pannal wickets, the run-rate remained between 3 & 4 per over throughout. Sam Pocock top scored with 39 and Steve Hendry's useful contribution of 24 kept the momentum going. However, a vital 30 not out in quick time by Kevin Joel gave Pannal much-needed impetus towards the end. The Pannal innings closed on 167 for 7. Tom Joel made the break-through early in the Masham innings. All the bowlers played their part; Joel, Chris Hunt, Dave Bagley, James Rawlings and Matt McWilliams each picked up two wickets as Masham faltered to 96 all out. There were some excellent catches, notably from Rawlings, and Steve Hendry's ground fielding set a great standard for his team-mates to aspire to. This maximum points win marked the third successive emphatic victory for Pannal, made all the more enjoyable by excellent sportsmanship & hospitality by our hosts.
Pannal 3rds 167-7, Masham 2nds 96allout from 26.3 overs.

Pannal 3rds v Darley 2nds
19th May 2007
The Glasshouses groundsman did a great job by ensuring that we could play on the strip on the edge of the square preserved for wet conditions, with the remainder of the playing area being especially wet. A consequence was that the wicket we utilised is uncharacteristic of Glasshouses and made it hard work to score runs. Meanwhile the strong winds created somewhat unusual conditions, making it tough for batsmen & bowlers alike. Choosing to bat, skipper Furniss was let off early in his innings but a difficult catch from Chris Hendry behind the stumps saw the first Darley wicket fall at 49. Darley progressed to 77-2 before the catch of the match by Sam Pocock at slip brought the break. All bowlers bowled well, recognising that anything short & particularly leg-side would be punished as it duly was. Notably strong 3rd XI debut from James Rawlings (4-27) who espoused the classic requirements of line & length bowling to great effect. The Pannal catching was at a good standard as we bowled the opposition out for 153 following a mid/late order collapse. The wicket had become no easier & Barry Waddington (60) & Rob Allison (39) grafted dourly to put on 106 for the first wicket, in the face of accurate bowling from the Darley openers, with the odd flash of aggression making use of the short leg-side boundary. A mini-collapse ensued but Pannal managed to splutter home as the opposition's disquiet with a couple of late decisions caused the game to close in ill-tempered fashion. However, we were clearly the better side & recorded a 5 wicket victory to give us 6 points & take us to third equal in the Division 6 table.
Darley 2nds 153allout, Pannal 3rds 154-5 from 42 overs.

Blubberhouses 2nds v Pannal 3rds
12th May 2007
The 3rds bounced back from a last week's defeat in emphatic fashion, blitzing Blubberhouses 2nds on their way to a 9 wicket victory. In one of the neatest, most consistent bowling displays that the 3rds have produced for a lengthy spell of time, Blubberhouses were the first to bat, stuttering and stammering their way to a total of 105 all out. Richard Strover's superb figures of 12 4 20 5 were assisted by the confident performances of his fellow bowling attackers. Dave Bagley (8 3 22 2), Chris Hunt (6 0 19 2) and Tom Joel (5 1 20 1) also found themselves amongst the wickets, whilst Jonathon Hare impressed on his 3rds debut, bowling his way to excellent figures of 5 0 12 0. A steady opening partnership provided 3rds with a platform for success, as Rob Allison (51*) earnt his first half-century of the season, whilst Barry Waddington (22) and Sam Pocock (25*) ensured the side reached the total, adding six precious points to this season's tally.

5th May 2007
Batting first, Pannal made a solid if unspectacular start to get to 94 before losing their second wicket, Dave Bagley for 23. Earlier Chris Hunt (21) had played some good shots, whilst the reliable Barry Waddington went on to hit his second successive half century before he holed out for 59. Whilst Giles Wilkes built on his good early season form with a steady 20, the rest of the Pannal effort was poor. No one else reached double figures as the innings closed at 168 for 9, with Jim Walker & a spirited 9 not out from Duncan Flynn ensuring the much-needed batting point. Barring something exceptional in the way of a bowling effort, 168 is nowhere near a competitive target at Glasshouses and so it proved. The seemingly never-failing Ian Hilton added to an effective bowling performance to score 45 before being stumped by Jim Walker, with fellow opener Duncan Haigh top scoring on 65 no & Wentworth notching an unbeaten 31. The winning runs came in the 28th over and Sharow cruised to a 9 wicket victory to conclude a miserable afternoon for Pannal.
Pannal 3rds 168-9, Sharow 2nds 170-1 from 27.1 overs.

Arthington v Pannal 3rds
28st April 2007
Choosing to bat, Arthington's batsmen were forced to labour in the face of Pannal's bowling. All four bowlers did commendably well, with Ben Chalkley 12-4-25-1 and Tom Joel 10-3-32-2 being the most statistically significant. Highlight of the fielding was Giles "just ask me, I'll tell you how brilliant it was" Wilkes' running out of Arthington's opener. The home team closed on 157 for 5. "Guest" opener, 4th XI Captain James Bickers led the way with the bat, ably supported by the ever-reliable "Bazwad", Barry Waddington. Bickers fell for 47 after the openers had put on 116. Victory then proved to be the formality it should have been, thanks to Waddington's application, stand-in skipper Dave Bagley's cameo and Ben Chalkley's explosive conclusion. Waddington was 50 not out at the end as Pannal won by 8 wickets to bring home their first points of the Division 6 season.
Arthington 157-5, Pannal 3rds 158-2 from 39 overs.

Pannal 3rds v Pannal Ash
21st April 2007
Not the most auspicious start to the season for the Pannal skipper who inserted an opposition, unrecognisable in terms of a number of personnel from last year, who went on to make 310-7 (he later ran out his fellow opener Barry Waddington in the first over to add to the home team's woes). Some positives however in Pannal's bowling as Ben "I'm a bit rusty" Chalkley bowled his opening 7 overs for 5 runs. Rob Cannell (3-68) and Matt McWilliams (2-70) were also in the wickets. The early loss of Pannal's first 4 wickets for 34 runs was salvaged by Chalkley (48) and Giles Wilkes (48), who put on 81 before the fifth wicket fell. Lusty blows from McWilliams (25) and evergreen wicket-keeper Jim Walker (22) were unrewarded as Pannal Ash ran out winners by 113 runs, whilst Pannal ended 10 runs short of achieving a batting point.
Pannal Ash 310-7, Pannal 3rds 197allout.
